about to fire up an old Merc 35 that has not run in several yrs

sprayed MMM in each cylinder and pulled the starter cord many times to loosen the rings

? is, should I spray a lil MMM or WD-40 on the starter gear spring and shaft? (that jumps up to engage to turn the engine)
there is some light rust on it........

thanx in advance

I have always been told not to lube that at all, it will make dirt stick to it and get gummy then it won't work right, maybe some teflon spray if anything.

Spray some W-40 on an old toothbrush and brush off the light rust, dry with toilet paper, grease with fingers a small amount of good quality light grease on spring and shaft, to slide well when working.
