i have a 1977 4r77b four horse seahorse and have no idea how much lower unit oil to put in. I had a larger 115 horse motor and had the two screws to judge how much to put in but this motor only has one screw. i bought it from my brother and im sure he didnt put lube into it. i drained the sludge but there wasnt much in it...anyone have any ideas?

It only holds about 3 oz, drain it and then lay it on its side and fill it up. Make sure to replace the seal washer on the screw.

maybe you could answer another question. its sometimes a bear to start. Ive replaced the spark plugs and drained and re-filled the gas tank.. when it starts it seems to run fine although it seems i have to adjust the oil/gas mixture at first. then for no apparent reason it stalls. probably not enough detail to diagnose but any helpful ideas wouild be appreciated

You should start with a couple of simple tests, compression and spark. Then move to the fuel system. Make sure all connections are clean and tight. It almost sounds by the way you describe it that it's time to overhaul the carb. Check the spark and compression first, easy and it doesn't cost anything. It will also give you a baseline of the health of your engine.
