Can I use white Lithium grease on the prop shaft before putting the prop on? A friend of mine says that lithium grease wont work for this? Just wanted to check before I did it...

Thanks.

Searun1

Any grease on that shaft is better than no grease at all, even petroleum jelly. If you want the Best, get a tube of 101 from a Merc dealer. Nothing on the market is better or even as good in saltwater. It's on the pricey side, but one tube will last you forever. It's good on the steering components too.

lithium is a salt metal I believe. it conducts and I have read that in certain cases can aid corrosion in brine. 101 is good as well as yamalube and triple guard.
good luck and keep posting

I have used the green marine wheel bearing grease for years and it works great and is still there at the end of the season after being submerged for almost 6 months straight.Charlie

WHITE GREASE, WHITE GREASE, WHITE GREASE,
Just pulled my 4 months in salt 280 prop and it just about fell off. I also spray the entire L/U...bellows, reverser, EVERYTHING. And I get the cheap stuff at Wallyworld (retired at 44, and want to stay thet way..so far, so good for 10 years)

Mercruiser Gimble bearing grease works wonders as well if looking for a waterproof grease...(No, they are not all designed to be under water, such as wheel bearing grease).
101 and OMC tripplegaurd are Good ones as well, as Rodbolt said.

And the reason I use white grease is simple. A while back I put all different types of grease and spray on a aluminum plate, tied a rope to it, dropped it off my finger pier in Puget sound, and took a second looks months later...nuff said. The best reason is you can spray it in and around the bellows while working the LU up and down. Keeps the barnacles/crud off.I hate maintenance...so I try to do it first as a preventive.
