Hi Johan, are we talking about an inboard with shaft drive out d back? Where is the crack & do ya know what the box is made of? ie alloy, cast iron.alloy you tig weld, cast you can stick weld.
I guess if you grease the outboard regularly it wont have any old grease and you wont have a problem. :) Marine grease is best.

It is a Yamaha outboard.
Crack is in the middle of the gearbox where the prop meets the box.
I figured I should not have neglected maintenance.
Thanks

This casting can be welded. But you need to take it to someone who knows what they're doing, and have done them before. You may want to reconsider and replace the unit if the crack is near the propshaft seal area.

johan,In addition to forktails advice depending on the size of the crack and duration of the welding procedure, you may need to consider removal of the carrier assy before welding is performed to prevent cooking the propshaft seals or carrier seals from the heat that the welding will generate.

Guys, thanks for the advice, will definately remove the carrier assy. and found someone that knows how.
Replacement is not an option here in Africa, spares are very rare and expensive. (Must be imported)
