I have cleaned up the manual starter for my 1959 35 horse Super Seahorse RDS21B and am ready to reassemble. I have read (on this great forum) how to tension the spring and I have tried the beginning of the procedure so I know I can do that. What I don't know is what to lubricate and what lubricant to use. I think I should lube the parts that engage/disengage the flywheel(Three units that swing in and out plus a ring and spring that operates them). Should I cote the spring with grease to prevent rust? The spring was thick with a gummy grease. I think I should lube the track for the compression relief. It was also heavy with the same gummy grease. The grease was so thick the rope would take up to 10 seconds to rewind. My local Johnson ourlet sold me "marine EP/wheel bearing grease" for the job. Is that right? Thanks in advance for any help.

It'l probably be ok. Something lighter might be better, like Lubriplate 105. Don't lube the pawls. But do put some light lube on the spindle and friction spring.
