Lugging a 2 Cycle

Gotta share this.

I'm relatively new to this site. I have come to realize that there are some real "old salts" on here that know their business through education, hard knocks, mechanicaning, and experience.

So I start reading about where to run your 2 cycle (rpm's at WOT) and read about decarbonization (with unleaded fuel?????? to me) and all. Even go to other sites where they talk about decarb.....Geez, what's this?

So this morning I am looking over Kenny's (Walleyehed) data on some (lotta) prop testing he did....1st entry in the "Prop" section.

The prop performance was great, but what really caught my eye was a couple of entries and comments he made about engine temp and fuel economy.

When he was lugging his engine (down around 5000 rpm's) he noticed his temps went up as did his fuel consumption. I have to relate this elevated temp to a person who runs their rig lugged and then has to have it decarb's to clean it up. And I think all of us would like to get all the mpg or hours of operation we can from our fuel.

Really brings home the fact that we need to keep em revving to keep em happy.

Thanks Kenny.

Mark

Its hard to do for most though, even me, allthough I have allways rung mine out!

My 150 Merc runs great, I have a HiFive that turns about 5,800-6,000, the engine in my opinion dosnt sound as good as when I run my four blade Turbo 25P at around 5,400 but what do my ears know?????????????????

Hey Lube dude, Care to elaborate on your props?

You didn't give the pitch of the five nor the speed and you didn't give the speed on the Turbo. Would be interested in those numbers.

About the sound at 6000. Same as I noticed on my little 3 banger. At 6250 she is screaming and when I back off to 5500 (where she belongs) she sounds good and solid. Course I just lost 5 mph. Can I tell it? Naw, if I don't look at the speed o meter. Grin

But I'll tell you one thing on this little tin can (I know you don't like them but...). She is quiet cause the lower half (and then some) is stuffed with foam and the top is all carpet, but with a total rig weight at 1650 with me included, pad or not you better slow down when you hit a wake or you will be in the hospital with a bruised 4th or 5th vert.

I might as well leave my rods at home as all I have done for the past 3 trips is play with this boat. Oh well, I guess that's what they're for.

Mark

I messed with everything last fall, different pitchs, Smart Tabs etc. I dont remember whats what now!

I am going to go all through everything again this spring and will report the #s then. I have even done some work on the engine. Honestly I cant remember if the High Five is a 23P or a 25P, I do know that its a smaller diameter than the Turbo. The High Five was about 55 MPH, and the Turbo is around 60MPH, but the boat wasnt running just right the last of last year. That should all be taken care of now. I have another prop to try also thanks to Walleyehead!

Will be awaiting. Still interested in the Turbo since Kenny is so enthused about it. One thing I would have to do would be to correlate performance between my current Ballistic and a Turbo to get the right pitch going into the Turbo if I did.

Mark
