I feel like my 8hp is lugging a little bit. It was running fine and the boat was getting up to about 13mph and now the boat goes about 5mph. If I disconnect the fuel line and let it run out of fuel it leans out and the motor runs perfect for a few seconds before it quits. I know it's not great to lean out the motor like that running it out of fuel, but it does confirm for me anyway that the motor seems to be running rich.
I don't know ANYTHING about outboard motors, but I've been around 2 cycle engines all my life. I tried adjusting the ratio using the only needle valve I could find on the motor and it didn't seem to make any difference if I went all the way in to the stop or out to the point it falls out.
The only thing I am left with is that the carb is dirty again and needs to be cleaned. I just had it cleaned a week ago, but I swapped fuel tanks to an old tank that I didn't realize was probably full of bad gas. It was immediately after that switch that the motor ran like crap. I dumped that fuel, cleaned the tank out and same result on the water.
Motor idles okay, just doesn't get up to RPM trying to drive the boat. I used 50:1 ratio and I'm wondering if it's possible somehow that's too much oil.
I'm replacing this outboard with a 15hp tonight, but I want to get the 8hp running properly before I store it or sell it.
Thanks...I guess the questions are, how do I adjust mixture? Would fouled plugs cause this or were the plugs fouled BY this? Should I take the carb all apart again and clean it out? Is 50:1 too much oil?
Thanks for the help
