another question is if i remove the 2 set screw bolts in the flange on the drive shaft to the transmission will the drive shaft pull out to the back of the boat so that i can change the rubber hose that connects the stuffin boxs

The short answer is yes. it may require a gear puller to pull the coupling off. Also, the shaft may run into the rudder, so you may have either drop the rudder or drill a hole through it (not uncommon to do).
