I was thinking it would be nice to buy a new steering wheel. Then I decided to buy some paint and paint thr motor this spring.
The question is, I want to remove some old decals from the transon and fix some minor chips in the fiberglass before painting.
I think next the sides perhaps but do I dare for two maroon strips one high and one below the water line which I think I could do with masking off and a small air gun. It may be one maroon and one orange decal strips 3/4" below the top painted maroon with a lund sticker at the rear.
Question#1.
What is a good paint for the transon? I am guessing painting the whole thing with the same paint? or will the top will be difference?
I want to try spraying as a begining trial but reading this board a roll primer and finish may be just great as well.

Perhaps the safest would be a roll painting after a primer.More work with the sanding but I think a better or safer finish.

I am removing the Rub Rail, the bow trolling motor and hand rails for the paint job as well as so now is the time to paint the overflow transon and the bow fiberglass area along with the boarder around the top of the boat.
Question#2 is a one part or two part paint and what brand.
I know you can roll it as well but would like to learn the spraying way. Could use smaller nozzel HVLP guns if needed. The top is in good shape but very faded and only the sides and the bow holds up after a goos waxing for any lenght of time.
I am guessing the old owner found it hard to do a good wax job in the overflow transon area.

I do lots of work around my house so I would think I could do a good job and with the money being short as it is I doubt I could do a painter right with my budget.

One last idea is to paint it all the same, top side and back and sand the area where the maroon color and pinstrip is and order all maroon in decals even the five inch high front to back on the side and clear coat a couple of times. Is that a way to go?
This way I can sand lightly and remove any last defects!

Thanks for any feedback.

Use marine paint and primer.

West Marine has allot of tips and good products either from Pettit or Interlux.

www.westmarine.com

Thanks so much for your feedback, perhaps I was asking way to much.

Lots of good paint info here. Do a search on paint ( top of page ) and you have reading for the next several days. I'm hashing this out in my mind as well.

Bill,

You're not asking too much.

Painting a boat, or anything, is all in the prep work.

I do HIGHLY recommend marine paints though.

West Marine has a painting guide (free) that is very good. It takes you step by step. It's not hard, or expensive, just a little tedious.

Re: Lund fiber glass tri-hull paint job

The more I look at my boat on my second computor screen I think a darker tan for the bottom and sides with maroon strips decals on the sides and a couple of clear coats. That would make sense for Lund to do it that way with production and all. I was not going to do the bottom until next year so that leave me with a lighter tan top paint for the bow overflow transon and trim around the boat.
I believe it is two difference tan colors or the deck got way to much sun. This would solve the detail maroon painting I was thinking it it or was.
Then with a new warm white johnson painted motor and decals I am back in business.

From what I seen with Awlgrip the paint job would be great and perhaps spray the top due to the many curbs.
The boat show starts in the twin cities this week so I hope to resolve the direction to go.

Anyway the step I need to get a handle on is the sanding and minor filling of gashes on the top.

Thanks for helping me think this out.
Seeya later!!

Bill,

Awlgrip is VERY expensive and dangerous. It's a great product, but it has it's drawbacks. Safety, is paramount with that product. I mean full headgear (breathing apperatus), etc.

The paints offered by Interlux and Pettit will do you just fine.

They shine great and have easy application qualities.

I shall look into the safer paint brands.
I was concern about the odor and harm painting in my garage. It would be great to paint outdoors in early april but so much dust and other things flying around.

Thanks for the input.

Re: Lund fiber glass tri-hull paint job

I am looking at wet sanding the top as I see after reading here that may be the ticket for the top fiberglass. With a new painted motor and rub rail I see a nice little work program for me this spring.

So now I do see the 5" high maroon strips with one under the rub rail and the other on the botton sides just under the water line being faded in spots. The other two pin strips are a little to be desire with all the marks and chips takenout of the color decals,3/4" red and orange.

The question is and don't laugh but can one wet sand the decall with fine paper to restore then?

IF not then either leave them alone or sand the sides and back transon for a prime and recoat. If I were to do that perhaps changing colors or a little difference design decal.
I was thinking if the fine wet sanding would work to some degree than clear coat or two wax job with 3M stuff/

Thanks

Bill

Two choices, remove the decals and use 150 grid sandpaper and then prime and finish coat. The boat is in the water 6hrs a week so standard top coat will do for the the top, sides, and transon. The other being remove all decals and wet sand the top, sides, and transon.

Spraying sounds easlier after the 150 grid but some say wet sanding will do just fine.
