Lund Tyee slow to plane, can't pull skier

Hi,

I have an 18.5 Lund Tyee with 110 HP Evinrude VRO (1990ish first generation oil injection). It is very slow to get up on plane in any circumstance and impossible to pull a water skiier. Right now my tachometer is not working so unfortunately I do not have RPM information. I'm going to see if I can fix that today. But any thoughts on what could be the issue given that the engine appears to be running well otherwise? I also plan to take a look at what kind of prop I have today. Would be nice if all I need to do is upgrade the prop.

Slow to plane typically indicates you need a prop with less pitch, but to make a valid assessment, you need a working tach, set properly for your engine. Then wot rpm, and rated wot rpm, current prop, engine mount height, etc.

doubt its just the prop.

what is the compression in each cylinder, is the motor running on all cylinders? you should be able to ski behind that boat with a 50hp on it.

Thanks for the comments. I don't know the compression but I've had the boat 'tuned up' a few times and nothing has been mentioned. I do know for sure that all the cylinders are firing... I know what it's like when they aren't!

I did just look at the engine mount and right now it's set as low as it can go and the prop is an aluminum 13.2"x19". So it looks like I could get some boost out of the hole by raising the engine and going to less pitch? Still hoping to fix that tach today after work.

motor height is the relation to the AV plate and the bottom of the boat

start with a compression test.

Have you ever been able to pull a skier with it? Otherwise, it's a prop pitch issue.

If motor runs strong, with how many souls on board did you tried to pull a skier out of the hole ? For proper skiing you only need the driver, the skier and a spoter if mandatory to count with one. Need to prop right the motor with a less prop pitch to run towards its mas wot rpm range factory stated for a fast hole shot. For that will need a tach in excellent working order...
