"04 1700 Pro-Sport. Two problems: PROBLEM 1) When ignition key is on, fuel gauge pegs at "F". Pink and black wires pass continuity. Delivering 12V to fuel tank sender. Tank sender shows 66 ohms at 3/4 full. Tracing wires shows no breaks. What should I try next? PROBLEM 2): Speedometer needle does not move. Yamaha 90 hp 4-stroke. Already tried blowing out the intake just below or above(can't remember) cavitation plate. Again, wires and fuses look good. Suggestions?

Re: Lune Fuel Guage and Speedometer

Fuel tank senders on mid-range and low cost boats in general are novelty references at best. The fuel guage on my current lund would drop slowly from full to 3/4 tank, then to empty. Yet I still might have 1/4 to 1/2 fuel in the tank. Previous boat fuel guages were variations of the same inaccuracy. I finally installed a a Northstar Digital Fuel Flow Meter. The more I use it, the more accurate it gets to within 1/4 gallon. Well worth the $130 I paid versus the cost of a potential water tow.

The hose that runs from the water pick up could be disconnected at either end, motor or guage, or could be kinked or pinched somewhere on it's run between motor and guage. Even when working perfectly, they are typically 10% to 20% inaccurate. You're better off with a GPS.

Re: Lune Fuel Guage and Speedometer

I had a non functional speedo on my new 1850 Tyee (one of two problems, the other was/is taking on water) that was hard to troubleshoot. It turned out the problem was not a Lund problem but a Yamaha problem. The pnumatic tube picks up from a small hole in the starboard side of the motor gear casing, a few inches above the prop. Where the tube exits the motor it is connected to an identically sized tube installed in the boat by Lund. From there it is one continuous piece that feeds through the long sock from the motor to the starboard side of the boat, under the starboard gunnel to the dashboard, where it connects to the speedometer. The problem turned out to be a blockage in the little connector that joins the two tubes - tough to find.

It took me a couple of hours to find the problem. In retrospect, the simple way to troubleshoot would be first to check that the little hole in the starboard side gear casing isn't plugged with something. If that checks out ok, take the dash out (held in by maybe 8 phillips-head screws), disconnect the pipe from the back of the speedo and blow into the tube. If you can blow through ok, then your speedo is toast. If you can't, you have a blockage in the tube somewhere. Disconnect the two tubes at the motor (you will have to take off the sock at the motor end) and try blowing through both. This will tell you which tube is blocked.

Mr. Beetnick, thanks for your reply. Gonna try your suggestions. My Pro-Sport leaked its second year. Seemed like I was always pumping the bilge. Problem was the neck on the live well pump was broen(cracked) right at end of hose. Have a friend who had same problem. I ring clamped a larger piece of rubber hosing over the broken connection. Has held for 2 years and bilge pump never gets used anymore!

Thanks for the insight into the leak. I will be taking m'lady out tomorrow morning, if Erie isn't blowing up too bad, so will see if she's still taking on water. If so, I will let the dealership do the work.

(no, not Mr. ... my name's Nick and my face is always burnt from being out on the water ...)

)

looks like your tip is the right one. I get some water in the bilge when I fill the live wells, but not as much as before the dealer tightened up the round cover in the motor well. Odd thing is I don't take on any water when I run the aerators, which are run off the same pump. The dealer says he'll fix it when I put the boat into winter storage.
