I made a topwater plug, simple design, with a nice pair of big treble hooks. Last night I decided it needed rattles - no problem, I've got some of those rattles for plastic worms - I'll just drill a hole & pop 'em in, right?

Ordinarily I would clamp it to the table but I figured I could hold it okay with my left hand. Of course the drill bit "bit" - next thing I know there's a treble hook stuck deep right in the middle of my thumbprint!

It actually broke the hookhanger off - so in a way I guess it's a good thing it happened. Surprisingly small about of blood, and very little pain. Until I tried to push it on through. Still, I kept waiting for waves of pain that never came. I think I could have snipped it off at the shaft & kept fishing (if they were biting).

It never really hurt at all, not enough to complain, until the ER doc injected the local anesthetic. The injection was by far the most painful part of the whole experience. That was about 11:15 last night and the thumb is still numb.

The doc used some kind of extra large needle to shield the barb and back the hook out - the wife started to throw it away but I said, "hold on, that's still a good hook; it's never been used. Well, it's only been used once."

I guess the moral of the story is, don't worry about the fish, hooks don't really hurt that much! But I do plan on finding a better way to test my hookhangers.

Next time( hopefully theres not a next time)save yourself a trip to the Dr. and slide a toothpick or similar object down to the barb and push the skin back. The hook pops right out with a little pull. Got 4 hooks from 2 trebles out of a friend in 5 minutes this way. He did another guy he found screaming for a dr. the next week. Works great

I'm going to remember that, ddaigle, and look for an appropriate tool to put in the boat. If it ever happens at home again, and it's deep as this one was, I'll probably go on to the doc anyway.

BTW, the local anesthetic has finally worn off and it's no more painful than the average paper cut. That really surprises me.

brother hooked himself in the thumb, we went up to the house and pushed it through his thumb

we were in the bathroom doing this.

As soon as we pushed it through and snipped it off he passed out! Smashed his head against the sink.

He then had a headache and sore thumb!!

so funny it was painful!!

Cool.

Since it didn't hurt much, you should have gone around and shown everybody in the neighborhood before going to getting it removed.

Of course you'd have to put on a show, shaking it, hollering & such, as you drug yourself over the lawns going from one house to the next. But it would have been a hoot to talk about later.

I can tell ya from experiance, its good to keep the neighbors freaked out. That way, they won't automatically call the Police when they hear gunshots coming from your garage, or you have your outboard cranked up and tune on it at 2 AM in the driveway.
