i just got a m40c running and have a question. there water out of pee hole is streaming strong and there is water out of idle check port.. check port water is warm and pee hole is cold.. i have it on muffs and after 3-4 minutes of running the head is too hot to even touch.. is this normal. if not any ideas where the problem may be? could it be due to having muffs on it and not in tank? not sure how much water i will lose in the muffs but it seems that the motor is getting to hot too quick..

Any ideas?

Thanks

The "touch test" is relative. Normally, the head should be cool enough to touch briefly, but too hot to keep your hand on it. The telltale shows that the cooling system is pressurized, but you could have salt or silt buildup. That could be cleaned with salt-away if you have a fat wallet, or vinegar if you don't. Or you could pull the head and visually check the cooling passages. Being on muffs is OK, as it merely supplies the water pump, which takes it from there. BUT, you don't have a load on the prop, so be very careful of over-revving.

thanks paul.. how hard is it to pull the head off the motor? i still think there is a cooling port clogged or something because it gets too hot to touch.. u can put your finger on it just for a split second and thats it.. the pee hole was clogged up when i got the motor but i was able to get it unclogged and now have a good stream out of it. i just dont know if i can tackle pulling the head off of it

One last question Paul. Will it hurt anything to drop the foot and just knockthe blockage out rather than taking the head off? The blockage appears to be between the thermostat and the impeller. Just figured I could do that and let the dirt fall out rather than remove the head and do it

Again thanks for the advice

You need to run the stat; The motor will not cool correctly without a thermostat, and will take way too long to warm up, causing plug fouling. The water tube can be cleaned with a stiff weed-whacker line or a wire, and yes, it's good to do that with the LU off the motor. While it's off, inspect/replace the WP kit as well, since you have already done the labor.
