Looking for a good shop to:

A) rebore a head

or

B) do a complete overhaul

140 Johnson 1994

Boat is dry docked until I can decide what to do. Don't want to get stuck with an unreliable source. I haven't found anyone locally who isn't backed up for weeks.

Any problem getting rebore done at an auto machine shop?

Thanks,

Mike

You need to find a place with a good reputation.
Where are you ???
There are a lot of machine shops around here that are really hungry for work right now.
What is actually wrong with the motor ???

Re: Machine Shop Recommendations

Thank you for your response.

I'm in southern Maryland.

The engine has a scored cylinder. I'm still trying to assess the problem.

I'm hoping to avoid an overhaul if I can remove the piston without removing the head. In this case, I'm hoping to replace the rings, hone the cylinder, and put back together.

I'm pretty sure the overheat problem came from a faulty thermostat, and possibly a lean carburetor. I plan to replace the tstats, rebuild carbs, and replace water pump to prevent a re-occurrence.

If head has to be removed to repair the piston, then it seems like I should go ahead rebore, and redo all of the pistons.

If the costs start to add up to $1000.00 or more, then I wonder if I should consider getting whole motor rebuilt. I see places on the internet, that will do this, and give you a warranty for 3-5 yrs, but I'm not sure which shops are reputable. I need to know who I can trust, before I can consider this option. It requires a certain level of trust to ship your motor off, and pay for repairs before you can inspect, and test the results.

Thanks,

Mike

Don't really know how you can remove the piston without removing the head.
How can you see that the cylinder is scored ???
Get estimates before authorising any work. If costs add up excessively you may be better finding an equivalent outboard that is in good shape. Then part out that one and recoup some cash.
