Hello, to all,,new here at Iboats,,I just made a Deal on a 1990, 16' Lowe(alum) boat with a 91' 40 hp Evinrude VRO,,tnt, the boat is sweet,,side console, bimini, trolling motor, 2 FF's, anchors, fitted cover, 2-new batteries, new tires on trailer, new winch and strap, etc.

The 40 Evinrude VRO seems to run great just wondering if there is anything I should check or look for?

The 40 Rude does have a trolling plate on it,,How much will that hurt it's performance?

Should pic it up in a couple days,,thanks for any info,,,,Mark

Sounds like a nice rig. I have a '89 40 Rude on a 17' Tracker deep vee side console. She runs 29-30 mph at WOT and 23-24 mph at 3800 rpm cruise with 2 adults (400 lbs. total), 10 gals. gas, safety and fishing gear. Speeds measured with GPS. I think you will get similar or better performance if it's set up correctly.

As for the motor, which I think yours and mine are basically the same, it's a great runner. I get good fuel economy, she's dependable as can be, and easy to maintain and work on. (Sounds like an ideal woman, haha)

As for the VRO system, there are as many opinions on that as there are members on this forum. My opinion is it is a great system. I have had nothing but good experience with it.

If you plan to maintain and repair it yourself, get the Factory Service Manual for it. Don't bother with the Clymer's, Seloc or others. Try Ebay or www.outboardbooks.com for an original.

Good luck with it and have fun!

Sorry, got carried away singing praises...

Go to the Frequently Asked Questions section on the forum main page and go thru the posts "General Engine Checks" and "Awakening A Sleeping Outboard". All items may not apply, but it never hurts to go thru those procedures. It will give you a "snapshot" of your engines general condition and a good baseline for future troubleshooting.

I don't know how the trolling plate affects performance when it is in the "up" position as I don't have one. I'm sure others will be able to answer that.

Thanks for the info guys,,,I had been eyeing this boat for a month or so,,,and after looking at maybe 10 or so different boats,,including fiberglass and I.O's,,,I figured this one would give me best service for what I want to do,,and should be pretty good on fuel,,with gas costing what it does now. thanks,,,Mark
