Magnesium Anodes ?

I have old magnesium anode rods in the garage and want to cut and shape them to size to fit my small 3.5 hp outboard.Can one use magnesium anodes on an outboard in salt water?

There are zinc and aluminum anodes specified for some Outboards. I do not know if Magnesium are used.

Of course if you do not leave the motor in salt water, a regular zinc anode will last the life of the motor. Why bother with the magnesium?
