just got done epoxying the mags on my 87 175 johnson. what a simple thing to do , some 5 min epoxy and wham...... all done! just kidding it took some time to prep it right like sanding all the old epoxy off and sanding the magnets to make the epoxy bond well. it wasn't really hard to do, any do it yourselfer can do it..

Re: magnets on your flywheel

in the process of doing that myself, 85 150 with 35 amp stator. does not look to difficult,, the flywheel cleaned nice, the magnets as well; picket up some JB Weld, will see how it goes.
what epoxy did you use? Also, did you balance it after, do you plan to, what did you use for spacing in between the magnets?
thanks!!!
nick.

i used 30 min epoxy from permatex, as far as i know it don't need to be balanced but i could be wrong. i used 7/16 bolts for spacers ,they worked out good.

Epoxy?
I would have thought there would be enough heat that the epoxy would deteriorate.

Bombardier sells the flywheel magnet expoxy over the counter. Part number 431929. Probably around $ 8.

Re: magnets on your flywheel

they give you two part epoxy with the replacement magnet, but it is only enough to do one magnet or mabye two. no matter what you put it will probably deteriorate over time . J B Weld might be overkill and if you had to replace one later it might be diffacult to remove.

If the magnets came loose because rust built up behind them and popped them free, then its best to bead blast the inner diameter of the flywheel where they mount to prevent it from happening again. Sandpaper cannot clean out existing rust inside the pitted areas of the flywheel.

Re: magnets on your flywheel

my flywheel didnt have much rust so a good cleaning with some brake cleaner and some 50 grit sandpaper did the trick.

Re: magnets on your flywheel

I did most of the above, used JB Weld and for spacers some hard plastic tube ( standard sink tap pipes OD 7/16).
I then left the plastic spacers in there JB'd in place to prevent magnets shunting around the rim like they did before.
I uses G clamps with big plastic pads under the clamp to spread the load, to make sure the magnets were right down on the rim. Stuff squeezed out during this so there must have been a little space in there. Nothing cracked!
I was concerned the clearance between these magnets and the stator poles might be tiny and so the magnets would need to be really flush down.
I believe in JB. I used it on my car to glue together a separated crankshaft pulley (rubber to steel) and its still there.
No one on this island can balance something like this so I will have to take a chance on this.
This is a blatant design flaw. Are the new ones the same?

Re: magnets on your flywheel

I would think that since the flywheel can only go on one way the factory balanced it there and if you space out the magnets properly there should not be a reason to balance it. You are not adding weight. It might be internily balanced. I will have to check on that.
