My wife and I are in the market for a sub-compact tractor. Our intown dealer has been offering Mahindra's at good deals. I'm just wondering if anyone of you have the Max-22 and could give me an honest, up front review of the tractor.

Re: Mahindra Max-22 User Reviews

I checked out several compact tractors before I bought "Big Orange", Kubota BH2150 with Power steering, AWD, Hydrostatic drive and front loader, 16 years ago. My second Kubota.

Hardest working, overachieving, piece of machinery I ever owned. If she needed replacement the only thing I would change is go to the 3150. Just mowed an acre in under 1/2 an hour in 90+ degrees. She just won't quit.

Something I heard years ago is Kabota makes their equipment to be total repaired in the field without special tool including replacing the cylinder sleeves. Not sure this is correct but they are sold even in 3rd world countries.

Mahindra is really making a sales push right now. Their tractors have been historically very simple, utilitarian tractors with zero bells and whistles. The EPA Tier III emission requirements required them to change their mode of operations, and their tractors are now a little nicer.

They're bragging about being the number one seller of tractors in the world. That's a bunch of crap, because the vast majority of their tractors are going to third world, far eastern countries and India where they use tiny crap tractors.

I have not had time to look closely at the new model subcompacts, however they look good from a distance. I see that there are some other unknown brands of tractors entering the retail market.

Me personally, I like the Shibaru built New Holland Boomer or Case line of tractors better than anything on the market, and they have a sub-compact series. Otherwise, I would prefer either the John Deere or Kubota. They're just built heavier with more guts.

Every tractor will do a perfectly good job the first 5 years. It's the second, third, fourth five years' ownership that a great tractor shows it's worth. And all tractors and equipment are only as good as their parts availablity.

That's why I would shy away from Mahindra, TS, Kiota or other far eastern built tractors--no parts out there to keep'em running.

I had a TC40D, excellent tractor. My buddy has it now and loves it. Kubota is also a very good choice. I have a ZD331 zero turn 72" deck mower with a 31hp diesel. Talk about making grass fly. Kubota tractors are one of the top of the line manufacturers........

1. Service
2. Dealer location
3. parts availability
4. price

Kubota is a proprietary design with limited outsourcing.
Mahindra is a generic design assembled with more outsourced parts

I have a dealer right here in town, that does the warranty work and service. He assures me preventative maintenance parts are easily available but if he had to do internal work on the motor or transmission he would have to order parts once they determined the problem. He has a good reputation (most small community tractor dealers do) and the price is just to right.

The dealer is also a Cub Cadet dealer and I'm not sure if it is true but I've heard the latest Gen Manhindra sub-compact and compact tractors are in reality just retagged Cadets (previous generation models). Is this true, anyone in the know.

Re: Mahindra Max-22 User Reviews

Can't help on the Mahinda, but I have a Simplicity sub-compact and used/maintained a John Deere sub-compact diesel from new to three years old. Both are good tractors, but would never buy/recommend a sub-compact. They do not compare to a compact tractor in any way.
The front end loaders are weak, all the attachments we used had to be for a sub-compact or had to modify to get to work.
Even a 5' rear blade will give the sub-compact fits.

The compact tractors are a whole different story. Even the 1978 two wheel drive gray water Yanmar would out perform the new 4wd sub's.

The big plus for the compact. There is a ton of attachments and every attachment would hook-up with no problems, even when the attachment was oversized for the compact tractor they would hook-up and run just fine, just didn't perform well.

The three point hitch is the same for both, but the drive shaft has to be cut and the weight of the attachment is just too much for the sub's.

The sub-compact are just very limited when compared to a compact.

If your going to keep the tractor for a long time and plan to accessorize, then the compact is the way to go.

The newer New Hollands Boomers are no longer Shibaru engines. New Holland is now having the Boomer line made by LG electronics division of L&S wire and cable make them and rebranded as New Holland.

I own a TC35 Boomer and follow the tractor forums alot.

Redneck Randy: Thanks for the info. I've been out of the tractor business 4 1/2 years, and have not been following the industry in any way. I just wish I had need for a compact tractor.

I agree with above about going a full compact tractor over the sub-compact. I especially like'em with the factory mid mount mowers instead of a rear mount finishing mower.

I would still shy away from Mahindra or any of the Korean clone tractors. The TS is even painted New Holland blue. Because the dealer's there today doesn't mean he'll be a Mahindra dealer 5 years from now. I too have a new Mahindra dealer close to me. I just prefer being able to go to my local non-franchised tractor parts dealership and get parts and service on a popular brand/model of tractor.

Just give me an old New Holland 3930 4x4 tractor with the synchromesh transmission and a factory loader, and I'll be okay--for the next 50 years' usage. You cannot kill those old cast iron tractors.

Re: Mahindra Max-22 User Reviews

Scottmm73, I own a Kubota BX22 which now has over 1300 hours with FEL and BH. It has been an excellent machine. I did not go with a mid mount mowing deck since I already had a mowing machine. The only suggestion I can make if you look at a Kubota BX series is this. If you buy the tractor with out the mower deck consider purchasing one of the after market skid plates. The mower deck protects the underside of the tractor from sticks, limbs and such. The BX series has a plastic fan that is on the hydrostat drive shaft that cools the hydrostat transmission. The fan is very vulnerable with out the mower deck. On the newer BX tractors, to replace this fan, the tractor pretty much has to be broken in half to replace. The cost of the fan is only $9. Labor for the job is upwards of $800.

The issues I'm seeing now with my tractor is all the hydraulic lines to the FEL and BH are starting to show their age and I'm having to replace probably one to two a month.

I would buy another BX series tractor. Hope this helps
