1989 Chap 2550 sx 454 Bravo, 2 batteries with perko switch. 1st official Maiden voyage for the 2012 season (I have run the motor in the slip a few times over the winter to keep it running) 90 deg here in Austin today. Ran fine to the cove where we anchored for several hours with the stereo, fridge running on battery #2, which I am suscpicious is on its final leg as it would not crank the motor, however #1 is an optima that cranks strong. When it was time to leave, no power at the key, noticed the 50 amp breaker on the motor was tripped. Reset it, engine fired right up for the ride home. Could running the stereo and fridge for several hours on the weak battery have caused the breaker to trip?

Re: Main 50 amp breaker popped

The fridge could be the problem. low voltage, and high amperage (aka bad fridge) could cause a problem if you have loose or corroded battery connections, or any where else depending on how your boat is wired.
Could also be nothing more than a glitch reset it and see what happens. Have reset main breakers that popped and they never failed again. You just can't troubleshoot things that don't keep failing.
