i have a chrysler 55hp that has been completely rebuilt except for the main drive gear ( believe it is called the pinion gear?) model #559ha serial #4140. i was told that the only way i could get that gear was to buy a new lower half. does anybody know if that is true. Also trying to find out how to tell what year the motor is if anybody could help me that would be great.

Thanks,
Keb

Re: main drive gear

ITEM 35 is called a Bevel Pinion with bearing part number 43-819261T1 from mercury for $95.33. This is off of a 1974 chrysler and yours is a 1970 however I bet it will work on your lower unit. Seems to me this would not be a do it yourself project because I believe the gear has to be shimmed and that requires special tools.

Re: main drive gear

i had planned on taking back to the guy that rebuilt the rest of the motor. when he did the rest he was told that the part was unavailable. however knowing what you just told me i will be contacting him about it.
Thank you very much for your help, Eurolarva, hopefully i wont need to much but things happen right.
