Hey Guys, I have been trying to figure out how to lubricate my steering cables. I have a commander 3000 helm mounted control for my Merc 125 that I am not sure how to take care of either. I have read enough of this forum in the last couple of months to know grease is cheap and parts ain't

MDOG

Re: maintenance of steering cables

My 90 has a zerk in the center of the clamp bracket which is there to lubricate the engine end of the cable. Also the nut (at the engine clamp bracket) can be backed off and more grease can be manually crammed in there.

At the helm end, only way to lube that is to remove it from the drive geer. But Morse says do not get any grease on the helm it'self (the area between the steering wheel and the drive gear as you will mess up the NFB function).

On the 3000, I have tried to grease mine also and couldn't get it apart. What I did was to partially dismantle it and shoot it with white grease in a rattle can....can get it at an auto parts store.

Mark

Well, that is probably done also. Since the outer jacket screws into the starboard clamp bracket, the only thing going through the tube is the center cable-plunger which is much smaller in diameter than the id of the tube and which comes out the other side and is secured to the front of the engine by a rod.

So there is plenty of room in there to lube both.

And I couldn't help but notice your snyacism. Course that's what makes for competetion; everyone doesn't like the same thing.

Mark
