I recently bought a boat and since I did not know when was the last time the owner performed any maintenance ... this is what I plan to do:

I know there must be tons of maintenance topics out there but I am looking for some specific answers for my OMC setup because information seems to be so hard to find.

The boat has a 1989 OMC 4.3 L V6 (Model # 432APRMED) and OMC Outdrive (Model # 985269)

1. Change Spark Plugs
2. Change Ignition Cables
3. Change distributor cap and rotor
4. Change engine oil & filter
5. Change fuel filter
6. Change outdrive water pump
7. Check idle timing
8. Clean and wax the boat

Can you think of anything else I should check for, change or do?

Second question I have is where do you buy all your parts (i.e. the oil anf fuel filters, the oil and plugs, wires)?

Third question is...I believe I need SAE 30 engine oil ...is this correct? What oil should I use for the outdrive?

Ayuh,... Right at the top of this page,... Click on the OMC parts links....;)

30W oil will work Just Fine....
A Syn-oil in 75W/90 is great for your outdrive,... I use Mobil 1...

Re: Maintenance Question

1st thing would be the correct Manual. Covers all that stuff specifically.

Re: Maintenance Question

2nd thing would be to change the drive lube first. Open it up and see if there's actually any oil in it first.

Re: Maintenance Question

I believe thats the Cobra drive? Either way, I'd replace the waterpump impeller without question.
