Major drive oil leak

OK my drive is a 98 alpha one gen II. The oil is leaking out of the prop area even when the drive is in the trailer position. It is not leaking from the rear seals near the prop, but appears to be filling the lower housing and running out. I just had a friend replace the entire waterpump assembly and bearing carrier assembly in the lower. The oil was draining before the bearing carrier assembly and pump were changed so I dont think he caused anything. The assumption was that the corroded carrier assembly was leaking initially, but I guess it is coming from elsewhere.

Any idea as to what seal or situation would cause such a signifacant leak at that location.

So close to getting on the water.....yet so far!!!!!!ugghhh

Thanks...

Drain the gear lube out and do a pressure test of the drive. A spay bottle with soapy water in it will pinpoint the leak. You can usually hear the leak when they leak like that. That carrier is a known leaker, along with the shift shaft bushing assembly.

Just don't more than 8 to 10 psi when pressurising the drive.

Re: Major drive oil leak

Gen IIs have a nasty habit of the vertical drive shaft seals in the upper housing coming out and dumping the oil. Which frys the upper gears and bearings.
Is your reservoir level going down? Pull the top plug on your drive and check for oil.

It is also very easy to dislodge these seals when stabbing the lower back on. They are not very tight in the case.

So far what I've seen of Gen IIs they are no way better that the Gen I.

We will pressure check the drive tomorrow. We removed and checked the bearing carrier assembly, which is new. The carrier was replaced and torqued, which was not done the first time. Any chance the lack of torqueing it would cause that kind of leak?

Also if the shaft seals are dislodged, how would you tell from pressure testing, since they are internal?

Thanks for the input.

I agree with cr2K. Pull the lower gear case off and look up inside the upper gear case with a light. The driveshaft seal in the upper gear case may have torn. The driveshaft can tear it out when you're ramming it in there. Look for an oil trail too.
