Major Engine Problem?

My boat has a Volvo Penta 5.7 engine with a Volvo Penta SX outdrive. Last week, as I was just getting on plane, I heard a screeching sound and the engine shut down. After getting it towed back to the slip, I did a preliminary check and found that it will not even turn when the starter engages. I have no idea what happened or what damage there may be and I am looking for ideas or ways to start investigating. I will put as many details as I can here so anyone with advice will have as much info as they can. Here are the facts:

I was running at around 3200 RPM when the shutdown occurred
Visual inspection of engine and outdrive shows nothing unusual
No oil in the bilge and a check of the engine oil showed normal level and oil is clean
Outdrive lubricant was changed less than a year ago and old lubricant was clean and free of water
Impeller was changed less than a year ago
Gimbal bearing was changed about 20 months ago.

I really am at a loss as to what the problem is and I am already resolved to having to take the boat out of the water to start investigating. I am just looking for any clues or advice in advance so I can get an idea as to what I may be facing.

Thanks in advance for any assistance

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Pull the drive to see whether it's a Motor problem, or a Drive problem,...

Pull the drive, then try to turn over. Still locked?
Then pull the plugs and see if it will turn over then?

Okay, so here is an update.

Based on some suggestions that I got, I went back up to the boat and checked a few things.

1. With the gearshift in neutral, I checked to see if the prop can be turned by hand and it does turn.
2. I disconnected the belts and it seems that all belt driven devices turn freely.

Based on this info do you think I am correct in assuming that the issue is in the engine and not the outdrive? Is it possible for the outdrive to be locked up and the prop still be able to be turned by hand when the shifter is in the neutral position?

What do you all think?
