My boat has a Volvo Penta 5.7 engine with a Volvo Penta SX outdrive. Last week, as I was just getting on plane, I heard a screeching sound and the engine shut down. After getting it towed back to the slip, I did a preliminary check and found that it will not even turn when the starter engages. I have no idea what happened or what damage there may be and I am looking for ideas or ways to start investigating. I will put as many details as I can here so anyone with advice will have as much info as they can. Here are the facts:
I was running at around 3200 RPM when the shutdown occurred
Visual inspection of engine and outdrive shows nothing unusual
No oil in the bilge and a check of the engine oil showed normal level and oil is clean
Outdrive lubricant was changed less than a year ago and old lubricant was clean and free of water
Impeller was changed less than a year ago
Gimbal bearing was changed about 20 months ago.
I really am at a loss as to what the problem is and I am already resolved to having to take the boat out of the water to start investigating. I am just looking for any clues or advice in advance so I can get an idea as to what I may be facing.
Thanks in advance for any assistance
Frank
