I am in the process of refurbishing my old 1983 18' Bayliner Capri (1950 type). It has an inboard Volvo engine as well as an inboard gas tank. The boats floor is missing, but there is aluminum plates set down to make a makeshift floor:redface:. The boat does not have any stringers, although I do not think it needs any (the fiberglass is flat on each side, and that is how the aluminum plates are held up). I have a few questions about putting one in. Do you have to leave an access hatch to the gas tank?? How do you secure the floor to the hull?? I am also wondering if anyone knows were you can pick up old Bayliner upolstery patterns and seating. I want to restore this boat to its original condition, but I cannot find the supplies to do that. It needs ALL of the upolstery (siding, front seats, back seats, driver and passenger seats, the engine cover, and the backrests).

1. Did someone remove the old stringers? I would think it needs them.

2. Yes, you need access hatches to the fuel tank. Probably three. One for fill, one for outlet and one for guage/vent.

3. Your best shot on upholstery is to get some old pictures and have a local shop duplicate. You will not find new/old stock.

Being brand new to the restoration itch I have little as far as expert advice.
However, I do believe the stringers serve a multiple function. The most critical is to keep the hull's integrity. Without the old stringers to use as templates, you will need to make new ones. The blue construction foam is easily shaped through the process of trial and error in getting new templates that fit the contour perfectly. Then transfer the image onto good laminate wood and re-install them. Glassing them to the hull will make everything rigid. Make compartments in the aft center to install the gas tank. Install a new deck with consideration for additional support where needed for seat mounts and such. Drill several 'plug' holes and buy some 2 lb or 4 lb polyester foam and pour into the holes through the floor to replace the foam. The foam also serves to provide structure for integrity and flotation in the event you need it.
Read through as many threads here and you will know way more about what you face in this potential restoration project. Good luck!

I was also thinking about putting bucket seats in the front. Will there be any way that the old back-to-back pedestals can be removed??

Capri - Your link did not work for me. Your project may be a lot bigger than you think at this point. The pictures should help us give you some meaningfull feedback.

Re: Major Interior Work!! Need Advice!!

Some of those Volvo 4 cylinder engines didn't have any front or side motor mounts at all. There is the ring that bolts thru the transom shield, and a single motor mount on the bottom of the bellhousing that pushes against the transom shield. That is all there is, then engine just looks like it's suspended in space.
Oh, and they didn't put full length stringers in those boats either. That was back when they were making them exceptionally light for better gas milage. Very thin hulls also.

Re: Major Interior Work!! Need Advice!!

You are right about there being no supports. I helped a guy out about a month ago asking where the "missing" side supports were on his friends Volvo. I would think that it would ruin the transom after awile:confused: I have heard a lot of bad things about these older Bayliners. I am going to improve the interior (stronger stringers, a fiberglass coated deck, etc.) Will this effect the boats performance in any way?? By the way; was anyone able to see the picture of the interior?? If not, then I will post the image on a more "public" photo website so everyone can see the image. The picture Will explain everything;)

Thanks!!

Sure it will, anytime you add weight, you will slow the boat down.
You can also bolt on motor mount brackets, and put in stringers. You end up with a lot more solid boat that is a lot slower.
You also only have 117hp there. When it was brand new and everything working properly. What is it now?

No, your picture doesn't show. Doesn't look like you have the complete URL. Should end in .jpg, or . png, or . gif, or somehting like that.

Re: Major Interior Work!! Need Advice!!

use a capitol "B" when logging on...

don s is right .....the motor is just hanging there !

and that boat has stringers......see thoes vertical risers in the bilge?....("walls of the bilge")

those are your stringers. the deck will sit on it....if the deck was rotted and replaced with aluminimum....good chance the stringers are rot as well.

how you attach it depends on what you use for a deck.

Re: Major Interior Work!! Need Advice!!

Thanks for the quick reply, I know what you mean about that motor (it seems like it would stress out the transom if it sat like that since 1983). Are there supposed to be mounting brackets on the engine?? I have looked under the aluminum and there are no stringers. Are the stringers hard to replace??

Re: Major Interior Work!! Need Advice!!

My Volvo is just hanging in space too. Mine has 3 holes in the RH side of the block so I'm gonna fabricate a mount and use an old style Ford motor mount to support the engine. Seems like a lot of stress on the transom to me too but I didn't build it.

Re: Major Interior Work!! Need Advice!!

The engine on my boat has the same three mounting holes on the sides. It would probably be a good idea to make mounting brackets for the engine (it would definately take a load off of the transom;))

Speaking of the engine, the wood barrier around the engine rotted (as you can see in the pics). Is that hard to replace (since it looked like it was attached directly to the floor???)

Thanks

That wood barrier is what used to be the stringers...
