GUYS PLEASE HELP ME OUT ON THIS ONE. I can't get into reverse. I have tried re installing the LU in every position. F N R

If I reinstall in reverse, all is fine. Then up to neutral fine. Then continue to forward I get a Audioble 'click' and goes into forward. Now back to neutral fine. When I move back to reverse it stays in neutral. I end up only with forward and neutral. The same thing happens any way I reinstall the LU.
Things to note.
1. With the LU removes and shifting from full foward to full reverse via the forward controls, and looking up the skeg the shifter only moves a tiny bit. Like a few millimeters each way? Is this right?
2. The shifter on the LU when moved has like a tiny movement for reverse, turn it a little more and into neutral ( tiny movement ) then turn it more and into forward, now in forward the shifter will move about 2/3 of a full rotation until it finds resistance to go back to the reverse position. So it's like 1/3 of rotation is for N and R and 2/3 for F. Is this right. I just cant seem to get this right. PLEASE HELP.
Thanks in advance
cheers

Sounds like an adjustment problem.
Odd question for you-is the shift lever in the engine fouling on the carbs? I assume the shift linkage on the old red/bluebands are pretty much the same as on my 50hp-if they are then you could always do what I did-install a late blueband shift shaft arm. They are shorter (the older ones foul the later carbs on the 50)and give more throw for the shift shaft arm. It's an awkward job tho-the powerhead has to come off to do it.

Re: Major Merc Problem, please help

clams thank 'god' for your post. I don't mean to be ignorant but I always shift with someone turning the prop. can you elaborate on how I need the motor running to test my shift position? Does this mean to ubolt the LU set it, re bolt it, start it, test it....then if neccessary unbolt it...etc

If someone is turning the prop when shifting, don't i just check the ratchet one way, free both ways and 1/3 movement for reverse, am I missing something?
I just really want this fixed.

thanks in advance...

cheers

The way I have usually checked is shift into nuetral, prop turns both ways. Shift into forward, attempt to turn prop backwards, prop should not turn, put into reverse, turn prop forwards, prop should not turn. Clams is right though, the proper way, as I understand it, is to shift while the engine is running on muffs or in the water. Good luck...

Re: Major Merc Problem, please help

Guys Im sure I have worked it out. The shift connection from the skeg to the LU is worn. I believe it turns a fair bit before it grabs and tries to shift. The splines on the male LU end look not too bad. The splines in the skeg peice look badly worn. To try and find/change this part is prolly not an option. Has anyone tried to fix this before.
I had an idea of spot welding onto each spline and carefully filing it down to have a better 'meshed' connection. Is my idea ok or not. Also is this common?

cheers

G'day tengals,

Come and see me. I am at 13 Boundary Rd Mordialloc Vic (9588 1229) and I will see if we can sort out your problem. I have never seen a worn shift shaft before (I'm not saying it can't happen though). It's more than likely a simple adjustment issue.

Cheers mate,

Nicholas

Is that "shop time" or straight labor? ;)

Re: Major Merc Problem, please help

Clams I am surprised at your apparent displeasure...

I am not here looking to rip people off and tengals rang me yesterday to chat about the problem. I told him to bring it in and if it looks like a simple issue we will deal with it appropriately. If it looks complicated and expensive (given its an old red bander) we will advise accordingly.

Personally I dont see why anybody would bother restoring such an old clunker but I can understand the nostalgic's amoung us.. I personally love my Chrysler's and would dearly love to see them reproduced as they whip the *** of the other manufacturers engines!! I have test run Chrysler's against Merc's and destroyed the Merc's on acceleration and time to reach top speed by not just a little margin, but a HUGE margin...

By the way Clams I have a copy of your setup for distributor Mercs and I certainly don't claim to be an expert......

Cheers,

Nicholas

Re: Major Merc Problem, please help

mmmmmmm........interesting.

In clams defence, he is one of the best going around. I got my old girl running a treat because of him.
We are all entitled to our own opinions, but with that said, from what clams has advised me so far, my motor runs like new.
IMHO ,of course......

cheers

Re: Major Merc Problem, please help

Nicholas **totally** misread me.

I was just warning that if push came to shove it would be about a 4 hour job to replace *either* of the shift shafts.

Price out a new 100hp POS before thinging that's too much to put into it.

-W
