making a guage pod. Fiberglass finishing question.

ok, using 3/4 oz mat over 1/4 ply with poly. installed it with pb and have one layer of mat. Sanded it down today, not a real great surface. do I need to build the mat up more and keep sanding, or can I use a fairing compound or high build primer to finish it off before paint? Its solid and waterproof, just not paint ready at this stage. Ideas?

Use a couple more layers of mat and resin. You can then make some fairing compound with resin and glass bubles to sand her smooth.
