Making sense of Merc serial numbers

Understanding Merc model numbers isn't too difficult. How about Merc serial numbers - has anyone made any sense of them?

All uoy need is a chart to covert then to years they are simply accending numbers

In looking at a chart, here is one that I can't figure out. it is a 115 hp (4cyl) where the beginning and engine serial numbers are as follows:<br />B209468 (beginning)<br />6437999 (ending)<br /><br />How in the world do they go from a B (letter) on the front of the number to a 6 (number) on the front?<br /><br />I honestly have no idea about what number are in the middle of those 2.

1987 started with B110054 and ended at <br />B239241 for 4 cyl 115s <br />6437999 was a 6 cyl built in 1983 serial numbers started at 6262961 and ended at 6440162

Thanks for helping me make sense of this Laddies! I was looking up a coil and that same coil is for both engines...you just use 4 for the 4 cylinder and 6 for the 6 cylinder.
