I would like to replace the spark plug wires on my 1976 1500 150hp outboard. Can I just buy custom for auto spark plug wires and cut them to fit outboard?

Just make sure it is a braided core wire you cannot use regular automotive wire on that motor.

Just looked at them a little more in depth and they are threaded into distributor. Thanks didn't know about the braided core!

I bought a complete distributor, spare, for my 1975 "850" and noticed the same thing about threaded into distributor cap. The guy had pulled the wires out of the cap. Threaded ends were still in the cap. Got them out with snap ring pliers. Are the threaded wire ends available?

I used Packard 440 wire, which was the original copper wire used by Merc.

Yes, the threaded ends are available;

You can buy them on the web, for about $7 ea.. They will be stranded stainless steel conductors, with the screw terminals already attached. You can cut them to length and install the spring spark plug connectors and boots. Search on "Yellow Tiger Tails", and you should see some. There are some old merc web sites out there that should have them.
