Hey,

Just got back from a boat show and there is this 2001 Mako -DC195 with 150 optimax that I am interested in. I am concerned about the reliability of the 150 optimax given all the problems listed here. Can anybody provide any advice regarding the optimax? The dealer wants 25 K for the combination- is this a good price? Where can I find blue book values of new/used boats- is there a site with this information?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Timej,
Go to www.nadaguides.com and go to the boat section. Your boat would average retail for about $23,260 stripped out. Just add the items that will be on your boat ie; bimini, fish finder, gps, porta potty etc...
I don't know anything about the optimax 150 but you can at least get a price for your boat with it.

Re: mako with 150 optimax

i have run a pair of 200 optis for 2 years with no engine problems. Engines have been reliable. Great on fuel and oil. No smoke. Starts with only a turn of the key. No choking, cold start, etc. Merc has been building DFI engines successfully longer than anyone. My advise is to spend money on an additional warrantee. DFI engines as well as all fuel injected engines 2 or 4 stroke contain more mechanical and electrical components and therefore have more to go wrong.

The problems they had, allmost brought down Merc. There have been recalls on the inherant problems in design, and surely, the 2002 models are ready to uphold merc's rep.
If not, it's "Hey Bonbardier...You wanna buy another outboard company?" At any rate, I would expect them to stand behind thier products,as any others should. Ask other customers you see about your local shop.
This is where most problems are dealt with, and therefore, can make or break your reliability and trust.
Here is another link to a thread on another board about Optimax you may want to read..Seems the only "buggy" is injectors?
http://www.wmi.org/sql_messages_html/onfly_file/doc.asp?num=48373&ini=d:\asp_ini\boats_motors_3way.ini&no_nav=
