Mallory points distributor advance springs

Hi guys
I have an Merc 228 with a Mallory distributor, the wieghts are advancing in at around 450 rpm. I pulled the thing apart and found that the springs are slack on there holders and they are different colors. I have reserched for this unit including a call to Mercury. They sent me a fax of the unit but it was very weak on a parts view.
They also sent me the advance curve which is very helpfull and clear, advance starts at 800-1100 rpm.
Any help with this unit would be greatly appreciated.

Merc doesn't sell just the springs for that distributor (or any distributor for that matter). You may find an auto parts store that carries the springs, the problem will be finding the correct ones so you have the proper advance curve.
The other option would be to upgrade to an electronic ignition. Complete distributor.

You can look in the phone book in your area for an "Auto Electric" place that does auto ignition. They'll have a device for spinning the distributor and can set up any advance curve desired. They usually also have advance curve info for just about all engines, Marine and otherwise.

You can do it by trial and error by replacing weights/springs and reading the timing info with a timing light. It's much less accurate and somewhat of a pain.

I'll go with Don's suggestion though, I like the electronic distributor. Napa has them (Sierra), MSD and Mallory also have them. They're not cheap though... around $350.

I recommend you have yours "curved"
to the spec sheet you have.
Reason, it is almost impossible to find a
new distributor curved for your application.
Put in pertronix if you want pointless.
I think you'll find distributors are generic
a 1 size fits all mentality.
A good "tuner" will often improve the curve
from his/her experience.
