Guys,

I noticed a component missing on my alternator and do not know what it is or where to get one. It looks like a condenser off an old chevy and mounts on the ground terminal (the one that shoud be there is missing from my unit) and has a wire that connects to the output terminal. Figured someone here may know.

See the 1st pic--The one with the yellow arrow at this url. http://s1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd474/tmp194972/Volt Regulator/

I cannot seem to crack the code on how to upload jpeg files to this site as I do not see any add album link anywhere.

Thank you in advance for sharing your expertise...it takes alot of time to learn about this stuff especially when tech resources are limited.

Re: Mando Alternator Component

The first picture is just a condenser. On the alternator output and it is not needed.
Some people install condenser or filter on the output terminals.
The purpose is to prevent alternator whine or electrical noise on the power output.
Back in the days of generators this was sometimes necessary to prevent whine in your radios.

With alternators I do not belive it is necessary. Mine has no filters of any kind and radios are good.

As long as they are good they do not hurt anything but if short could blow alternator diodes or voltage regulator in the alternator.

The second and third pictures I do not know what they are.

Re: Mando Alternator Component

Thanks for your insight. I will just leave it out of the loop and see how it goes.

BTW the other component is the voltage regulator off the same unit. I had to replace that also as the leads were broken and unrepairable.

Best regards and thanks again!

You may need that condenser, especially if you have an electronic ignition.
