I picked up this Mando alternator used. It looks like this:

I can't get it to charge and I'm pretty sure I have the connections right but I wanted to double check.

B - Battery (Charging Cable)
S - Jumped to B Post
EXC - To positive side of Coil with a diode to stop run-on.
E - Grounded

I don't have P, L2, or the small terminal next to the B (Battery) Post connected to anything... should they be?

This is how I have it hooked up except the 12+ switched is going to the pos of the coil with a diode so I am guessing I have a bad alternator. While it is running, I am showing 8 volts at the exciter post and 12V at the batt post.

just by looking at the picture you took of the used alternator that you bought, someone took some black spray paint to the connection side without really protecting the posts. Did you clean those all up including the nuts securing the wires? Almost sounds like you have a poor connection on 1 or all of your posts.

What are you hooking this up on? Be specific with things like Mercruiser, Volvo, year, model, type engine etc. There are wiring diagrams available.

Re: Mando Alternator Install - Help me double check

The pictures above are from the same alternator, its not my alternator in the picture.

I'm using this on a Merc 470. I have the conversion bracket to go from the stator charging system. I put an auto alt on it to get me through the 4th weekend on the lake and dropped the mando alt off at a local rebuild place to have them check it out. I'm about 99% positive all my connections were good and that this mando alt just wasn't any good.

Thanks!
