I just got my boat back from the shop. It's a 98 merc 3.0l inline 4 cyl. The guy at the shop said the riser/manifold was leaking water. This is where the two are mated together. I purchased a new riser because the old one was falling apart, according to the shop. Both risers did this.

My question is since I have a new riser can I just get the old cast iron manifold machined? Or is there a different problem? The guys at the shop suggest purchasing a new one. he says they are about 400 bucks.

Just looking for suggestions and maybe a place that sells them used or new for less that 400 bucks.

thanks guys.

Unless you also wish to replace the engine soon due to water ingestion, replace the manifold.

As you can see there is NOT a lot of metal between the water jackets and the exhaust and you are already lucky the leak has NOT killed the motor and if they really are rusted away they have to be changed

they aren't rusted through. They look pretty much like yours. I am worried that water will get back down.

so anyone know where i can get one for less than 4 bills? Maybe in hundred to two hundred range?

Re: manifold to riser water leak

I'm confused. How many risers and manifolds do you have? One of each? Are you saying the old riser leaked at the gasket and so you replaced it with a new riser and now it still leaks at the gasket so you're looking at replacing the manifold? Can you post a pic of your manifold mating surface (like tommays') so we can see it? Chances are if the old riser actually needed to be replaced the manifold does, too. Hard to say without seeing it though...

What kind of shop? Is it possible that they're throwing parts at it?

The old riser was falling apart. That's why I replaced it. It just so happened that it was leaking as well.

I get the boat back today so I will try and take pics of it.

i have a 22 year old boat the riser went.i replaced the riser and made sure the mating surfaces were clean and true.manifold was just fine.my pos sits on a trailer and when i put it back on the trailer after use i flush it everytime.thats my manifold i don't know how yours looks but if you flushed it everytime yours might still be good.my friends 3.0 merc.had the same problem same results.just make sure the mating surfaces are clean and use a new gasket.

if the riser was falling apart... and probably has the same degree of exposure to corrosion as the manifold... and knowing that IF it dumps water into the engine, you will probably wind up needing a new engine - a LOT more than a few hundred dollars... isn't a new manifold good insurance???

Ya you guys were right. I just bit the bullet and ordered a brand new oem manifold. Now the riser and manifold are brand new and I will have the peace of mind that I won't have any problems at least as far as those two pieces are concerned.

Cool...
It's nice to know that every once in a while someone actually listens.
Best wishes, you did the right thing.
