The casting holes around the ports are the only thing that's ugly. The ports themselves look just fine to me. The gasket surface is good and so are the bolt holes. I say slap her together!

its a sand cast that's then milled on the matting surface. If you want polished ports it would cost about 5 times more

Fair enough, i guess i got what I paid for, any idea on life expectancy on salt water being sand cast?

Same as the old ones. Next time dig a little deeper in your pocket and get the e coated Mercruiser ones for salt. They will go farther per dollar but you will spend more to get them.

seems like E coat is for fresh water and Ceramic coat is for salt, but they are like 1K for the set.

Put a straight-edge on the mating surfaces of all four pieces to ensure they are flat.

If they're not perfectly flat they could leak with disastrous results.

Some people here have had to have the "off-shore" pieces milled to get them flat enough to seal properly.

Ayuh,.... Been there, Done that,.... .050" 'tween the exhaust gasket face, 'n the outer gasket face,...

Ground the GLM off the side of 'em, 'n painted 'em, tryin' to hide my disgrace,...

Would a jet hot coat on the inside of the risers help protect them at all from salt water?

Yeah....Ears burning? I was talking about you!:joyous:

The only sure way to protect them is to install closed cooling. (But that doesn't "protect" the risers)

They MUST be inspected every couple of years or so and replaced before they destroy your engine.

Internal ceramic coating might help though..

You'd have to ask them if they do marine manifolds and if it will work in a marine environment...

but it's not cheap

Well, the only reason I ask about jet hot coats is because they coat inside and out as well, and it's a pretty damn durable coat. I use them on turbo exhaust manifolds which see rather extreme temperatures but do not flake, peel, or wear.

Obviously different application than one that will see saltwater, but the protection should be similar, no?

I would call jet hot on that one. I don't think it will stand up to salt water. I live in Wisconsin where we use road salt by the dump truck load. My jet hot coated headers on my truck were rusting after the first winter.

Don't know what "Jet Hot Coats" are.....

I had a set of (new) Y-Block Ram-Horn exhaust manifolds ceramic-coated for my 55 Ford truck. Performance Coatings told me that they would NEVER rust (inside or out....they coat the inside too)

I believe Mercruisr OEM manifolds are coated with something. (I don't know what)

If I was going to operate in salt all the time, I would have closed cooling.

Jet Hot is good stuff. Used them to coat the headers on my Dodge 5.9L and my intake manifold on the same engine. I'd say if you have the cash, do it. But I agree that a call to them is warranted. You are talking about the inside of a mani, not the exterior.

Agreed! The last thing you want is for them to develope a leak at the sealing points.

Agreed. I was thinking them or Swain Tech. I should actually find out what coating was on my turbo manifold, damn near bulletproof for me so far.
