How can you test the manifolds and risers to see if they are flowing enough water?

Re: Manifolds and Risers

I've taken mine off and looked at/into them because I had a possible over heating problem.

Re: Manifolds and Risers

Bondo, when I start the engine on muffs or in the river the manifolds and risers heat up in a hurry. Burn your skin if you touch them. The impeller in the alpha drive is new (had bad one in outboard that was new). This is my first I/O and the engine seem to be cool. I can touch the block with my hand. The temp gauge reads right but not sure it is operating properly. I pulled therm. cover and could see water sitting below it and it was open. The manifolds and risers had 6 hrs on them and with a visual inspection appeared to be good. No rust(discolored walls) or scale. This is really beginning to make me angry.

Well,<br />Now I know you have an Alpha........ What Engine ?????<br />Pull the hose from the outdrive, to the T-stat housing... Is there Good Flow there..?????<br />Pull the hose going Into the manifold.... Is there Good Water Flow there..????<br />Did you find All the pieces of the Old Impeller ???<br /><br />"Burn your skin if you touch them."<br />Ayuh,<br />That's Too Hot....

Re: Manifolds and Risers

Sorry, I'm an idiot..I have a 350 Mercruiser with a carb setup. I pulled the hose from the transom and water was coming out but I'm not sure how much should be coming through. I pulled the one going to the riser and there was nothing. I will try to pull the manifold hose when the rain stops. The old impeller was replaced as preventive maint. it wasn't missing any parts. Is it possible for the power steering cooler to be restrictive? Could the circulating pump cause this? if so how can I check it? And if you could describe "good" flow, should it be blasting a full hose of water or a steady stream.. I really do appreciate the help.

Re: Manifolds and Risers

describe "good" flow
A 1/2" hose will show a 1/2" water colum of Clear water(No Air), in a steady flow... Not much Pressure, just a Steady, Clear Flow.....<br />If you position a hose in the Verticle position, it'll flow Up, maybe 2 or 3"s, before it topples over on itself........ Make Sense ??<br />
I pulled the hose from the transom and water was coming out but I'm not sure how much should be coming through.
Pull the Other End of that Same Hose(where it enters the T-stat Housing).......<br />Then, You're Checking the P/S Oil Cooler(Yes, it Can be Clogged) Too.... <br />
Could the circulating pump cause this? if so how can I check it?
I Really Doubt it.......<br />But,<br />AnyThing is Possible........ <br />Only Check I know is,<br />Take it Apart........<br />
I pulled the one going to the riser and there was nothing.
OK,<br />Either go back from Here,<br />Or Go Forward from the Outdrive Fitting...........<br />You've got to find out,<br />Where,+ How Much,+ How Far your water IS Getting......................... ;)

Re: Manifolds and Risers

If you guys dont mind I would like to ask a question on this subject while its open. <br /><br />1988 5.0 mercruiser alpha one V8 305 cu 200 hp on a 22 foot Renken Seamaster W/A-- If my temp gauge reads fine and I cruise ok at 3200 rpms (22-24 MPH) my top speed is only about 28-30 - my manifolds and risers seem a bit hot although I dont know how hot is too hot -- Can I be losing power if they are to hot -- I think I should see higher MPH ??<br /><br />Thanks <br />Cool It
