i am thinking of buying a new or slightly used outboard. i was wondering if i bought a manual start could i modify it to be an elec. start also...add a starter solenoid. also, a 15" shaft compared to a 20" inch shaft, is there any differences between the two besides the fact one is longer than the other. would the 20" help plane better possibly resulting in increased speed or something.

Shaft lenght depends on the transome height you have, want to shoot towards having the cavatation plate(wings on lower unit)level or slightly above bottom or boat hull.
Manual to electric? Ussually can be may be cost prohibitive(ie: flywheel, bracket, starter, choke, solinoid, wiring, cables) Best to get the one to suit your needs the first time around.

Hi Headrick
If your going to buy a motor buy the one you want and need. The difference between long and short shaft lengths is for different boats. Some boats have a deeper transom. Unles you are like some of us and have piles of spare parts under foot, These modifications can cost more than the cost of the unit. I have a freind who dropped off a 25hp evin. manual, tiller, short shaft. He wants me to turn it into a remote, elect, long shaft. I told him I would do it if he found the parts. I've had this motor six years now.
