manual tilt lock?

my 73 merc 650 is stuck in the down position with the shifter in neutral. my understanding is that you have to turn the prop to shift to forward to get the tilt lock released. if this is right, which way do i turn the prop. looking from the back to front?<br /><br />You guys are GREAT!!!!!!!!!!11

You need to push the lever into forward. Then tap the hooks with a mallet until they release from the locking rod. They will slowly release and return to the original position.Then spray WD40 into the front of the L/U and on the hooks to lubricate the reverse locking cam and related components.
