Re: manual tilt lock

You don't say what motor we are talking about. However on most all OMCs, the tilt lock holds the motor down so it doesn't suck itself up out of the water in reverse gear. They are meant to be operated in the lock position if there is a choice. They have an overload mechanism that releases it if you hit bottom or a log. If you don't believe it, lock it down and then get behind the boat and grab hold of the lower unit skeg and yank it rearward....hard. It will release with a loud noise sounding like you broke it. But all is well, that is normal. You have to yank a big motor a lot harder than a small one.

Having said all that, if you are running at slow speed through shallow water or stumps, where you know dang well you are going to hit something, go ahead and release the tilt.

Re: manual tilt lock

Won't lock, huh? That's interesting. I can think of reasons why you wouldn't be able to unlock it, but not the other way around.

Is the pointy knob on the front, in the center, above the transom, present and free to swing from lock to unlock position? It is linked by a rod to the claws that grab the tilt rod. Swing it one way and it lowers the claws to grab, swing it the other way and it lifts the claws away from the tilt rod. If it were missing or broken, the claws would be in grab position all the time. You must have some kind of problem where it is stuck swung to the unlock position.

Re: manual tilt lock

A lot of those older motors only lock down in reverse. They unlock in forward or neutral.

Re: manual tilt lock

But this one locks down manually by the lock/release knob. I don't know why this one doesn't lock. Maybe the link rod from the knob is bent or replaced by a jury-rigged affair?

Re: manual tilt lock

I'm telling you there is no relationship to the reverse or gearshift. It is locked down or unlocked strictly by flipping that little knob one way or the other. That's it, period.

That is correct on an electric shift motor.
