Hey guys, I recently had my engine serviced and the tilt is completely busted. To give you a little information it's an older 48 HP Johnson and it has a manual cylinder under the motor for my tilt. Do you know of a good website to try find of these used? I can't seem to find any manual tilt parts, all power T&T. The mechanic wants $1200 to fix it... and that's not happening but I need to be able to raise and lower my motor  Thanks.

Re: Manual Tilt

If this part is the "tilt assist cylinder", operated by a cable running to a lever, then I,m afraid it,s an unserviceable part, & must be renewed.
Can you manage to disconnect the plastic cable nut from the cylinder?? It may be just that the valve has seized-mine did, & I was able to loosen it up & pack the area with grease. A damaged cable will prevent proper opening/closing of the valve cylinder too.

Re: Manual Tilt

Yes Davy! That's exactly it. And unfortunately yes that is exactly what the mechanic told me, he also said $1200 and that's out of the question :(. I don't think there is anything I can do but replace it since that is what they are telling me, they tried to fix it. I am currently in the process of looking for a old used one online to purchase because my motor is currently stuck in the down position! Thanks for your input Davy.

Re: Manual Tilt

ive been looking for a reasonably priced one for 2 years for a customer who is cheap and still running his motor with out it. You can find them for around $600 and replace it your self with little or no problems just watch your fingers

Hmm I might just try and do that, I have e-mailed a few used motor sights online to see what they have and for what price. A guy I know locally told me he should be able to get that for $200 so I am hoping he can come through  do you know of a sight that would give me good detailed instructions if I decide to do it myself, because I am by no means an outboard mechanic lol. Ohh and I just got an e-mail from the guy at sea way marine and he said he has the part for $80 but that doesn't seem right

Btw Davy, I went to the site to look at my motor. I can't find any parts for replacing tilt on it, just more or less actual motor parts... Am I missing it?

Re: Manual Tilt

I had the same problem. Molst motors have a manual locking pin on them
if you tilt them up by hand. If you know where your tilt has to be you can
insert a pin thru the holes at that point. I drilled out the valve and let the
fluid out. Now if I have to raise it I do it manually. Not that big of a deal.
You just can't go fast in reverse which I don't normally do. cost of the repair
job - one drill bit.

Here's a link to the diagram & parts list for your motor m8. Part# 0434037.
The $80 quote you got via E-mail was most likely for the cable.

Slide hammer needed to remove top pin....

DAVY

Thanks Davy, ya it was just the cable for $8. I went ahead and took out the recessed alan screw at the bottom of the cylinder and drained the hydraulic fluid and released the pressure so the motor will now go up and down. Only problem is, like stated above, the engine will fly up in reverse so for now I just have a bungy cord around the motor which actual works rather perfectly. I get just enough give if I hit something, yet safe to go as hard as I want in reverse :D it will do until I get the $400 to replace the cylinder. Thank you all for your advice!

Re: Manual Tilt

There's suppose to be a slide hammer adapter for the threaded end of the pin but someone already mushroomed the other end of the pin so I did it the hard way. I sawzalled the flat end off and cut on each side of the upper mount inside. That got the cylinder out of the way then I heated up the bracket around the holes and punched out what was left of the the pin. This was an absolute pain in the---. I burned through ten blades. One local shop had my same boat and motor combo and the guy was into them for 1300 doing this same job. Every shop around here can tell stories for hours about taking these things out.

Re: Manual Tilt

I almost forgot, I called used outboard parts shops all over the country and they said they had these cylinders but most were shot and the rest were sloppy. The bottom pin I got out with a brass punch.

Ouch man! Well I'm glad you got the unit out anyways.. I am hoping it wont be such an issue but I'm clearly being optimistic :D I'll let you know what becomes of it as soon as I start to remove it!
