I just purchased a 1981 Johnson 9.9HP rope start motor. It doesn't come with any manuals (owner's, service, etc.). I've searched the forums here and know that the Ken Cook site has manuals for sale, but I'd like to first see if I can find something used on Ebay, etc.

There seems to be enough available for an '81 in terms of service manuals, but the owner's manuals appear to be scarce for the '81 9.9/15HP. Does anyone know what years are comparable to the '81 that would basically give me the same information (in terms of the owner's manual)?

Thanks...

What exactly are you looking for in an owners manual?

About all it will contain is:
Sparkplug XXXX
Wash with warm water and mild detergent.
Check the lower unit lube...
Mix tcw3 oil with the gas at 2.6 ounces per gallon of gas... 50:1
Grease all fittings...

Although the motors will be slightly different, the manuals and motors are all basically the same for 9.9 and 15hp, Johnson and Evinrude, from 1980-1990.

Note: in 1985-86, the manuals called for the fuel ratio to be 100:1, OMC later rescinded that and changed it back to 50:1.

I would get a repair/service manual and forget about the owners manual.

This is the first motor I've ever owned so I thought it would be good to have an owner's manual. Just wanted to read through it and make sure I was doing everything right in terms of maintenance, winterizing, etc.

Re: Manuals - Comparable Years for '81 OMC 9.9

I bought my '88 9.9 new, so I still have my owners manual along with the service manual.

The OMC service manual actually covers the 9.9-30HP models but it breaks down each job to a section on the 9.9/15, the 10/14 where appropriate, and with yet another on the 20/25/30.

There isn't much worthwhile in the owners manual that isn't also covered in the first 40 pages or so of the service manual. This includes items like where and how often to lubricate and grease, how to winterize, etc. etc. I'd recommend you pick up the service manual and read through section 1, but don't bother with an owners manual unless you're really interested and can pick one up on the cheap.

It was closer to '85-'89 that the owners manuals recommended 100:1 mix for non-commercial use BTW.

Thanks for the advice, Roscoe and Ratracer. I'll look for an OMC factory service manual.
