ATTENTION MERCRUISER
All we try to do here is help people with your product line. Most of us do not have easy access to dealers so we rely on the "online service" of the internet.I can understand your response to removing/hacking/rehacking internet sites that show the information contained in your so called manuals. But really is the money THAT important to you. It`s not like we`re talking BILLIONS in lost revenue.I consider them "tools" that help advertise your product line and let owners try to do some of their own work. You think you made them all disappear, THINK AGAIN .There already out there . The best thing you could do for customer relations is GIVE BACK THE ONLINE ACCESS.
Respectfully

I've seen what looks to me like this same kind of petty grabbiness exhibited by corporate entities before, and I always thought it was probably a classic American management f#@%-up; letting the beancounters make too much policy, not directly related to accounting. This is how you end up with companies to whom important demograpfics become invisible, and within a few years, they get supplanted by foreign manufacturers, who actually do understand the primary, secondary, and tertiary markets, and develop product, and POLICY that suits those demograpfics better. There is no other reason for Toyota, et., al being so prominent in the US. I think these companies that hand over too much control of the company helm to the bean counters do it in the first place, because they are already seeing catastrophe ahead, and they look to the money guys to get'em more money, before they start defaulting on payments to suppliers. I got the ugly feelin' that by the time this happens, it's already too late, the management's been a loser for some time, and if they weren't this crap with the hackin' and threatenin' would never have occurred to them. Yeah, smells to me like Merc is about to do a Chrysler without the bailout. It really CRANKS me to see these American institutions managed by a bunch of hand-to-mouth baby-boomin'spoiled-biatch jackdawes, who's idea of fiscal responsibility compares poorly with that of the federal government, and who's idea of innovation would be on a par with the crocodile. Sorry, Merc, but it really feels to me like you guys are engaged in the commission of a crime the penalty for which is integral to it. You blackgards cut us, you're gonna bleed. Don't you get it? WE ARE YOU, ya jackasses. Ah, well.... Cest la vie. I think I hear Darwin calling. Oh, yes, collect call to Mercruiser from a C. Darwin - Paging Mercruiser...... I got manuals numbers 9 and 11. Anybody needs'em, I want to know.

As a professional photographer I understand the importance of protecting your copyrights. The digital age is making it very hard for many people like me to continue making a living. Think about it... anyone seen a photo-matt type store or a pro photo studio lately? The printing business has also gone to only the large retailers. Everybody is a pro now days, they can photograph and print on their own.

I know that the internet has helped me do my own mechanic work. Things that I would never have attempted before I can figure out by getting on this forum and talking to folks here. I have a forum that I frequent for my cars as well. I'm sure that this has hurt the repair shops.

In hard economic times companies will grab at whatever they can to stay a float. It kills them when they see people steeling what is theirs. They do own this information and have a right to control it.(I only say that because I have already downloaded the manuals that I need).

I think that if the boating companys do not begin to help the shade tree type mechanic the boating industry and market will shrink and they will loose their future. In a bad economy people will fix the old boat before buying a new one. They will fix it themselves before taking it to a mechanic. If they cant then they won't do it at all and there goes their market.

The music industry has had to figure out this copyright issue in the digital age. They have suffered but are starting to figure it out. The key for me as a photographer has been embracing the technologies that make it difficult and then charge for my services in a different way.

Maybe the boat companies should build a web page that has the free manuals with some advertising on it. They would make more money from that then selling printed books. Their mechanics should charge to chat online.

I don't like that the manuals are gone but I understand it.

Don't worry there is allways a work around. I'm sure they will be back in some way or another. Just a matter of time.

Thankfully I 'v got the manuals I need, but I'm selling the cruiser soon, and getting a bowrider (something in the 18' range).
When I do I'll be looking for a volvo just to spite Mercruser.

I have #9 and #6 if any one needs them, just pm me.

That's the point right there... Well put Mr Graham.

I suspect the philosophy behind this is that if 1000 people download it free, then that's $80,000 of lost revenue... That's just not true... If they couldn't download it they wouldn't be buying it instead, they would just go without, or buy a much cheaper alternative, or ask for the tune specs here.

We have a saying in Australia to explain what Merc are doing with this attitude... "Cutting off their nose to spite their face"....

I do understand about the copyright and when push comes to shove, they are right, but is that going to win them any friends (new sales)? I seriously doubt it....

Re: Manuals

I wonder if they got any pressure form their dealers? Being able to do it yourself takes food from the dealers and their employees.

That said....

I think I have a few to contribute to a data base.
