Hello everyone!
Just got my 4.3L Merc running B-E-Autiful! Rebuilt the Carb. Refreshed the Ignition. Timed it like a Rolex.
Took it out Saturday. And it sounded like there were marbles rolling around in the rear of the engine compartment. When the ship's wheel was put straight, the noise quieted some. On turns, loud as hell. Messing with the drive trim helped a little. Rest of the day was spent just floating and hanging out enjoying the beautiful weather. Got her back in and home. When I was home, I put the muffs on and tried to find the exact location of the noise.
First I checked engine timing. It ws perfect. Then I put her in gear and reved to 1500. Prop turned smooth with no noise from the drive at all. The noise was coming from the bellhousing of the engine. Mechanical clunking like marbles rolling around.
Here is my guess-diagnosis:
Bad U-joints and most likely a bad Gimble bearing. Can I replace both of these just by pulling the drive off? I hope so. Thanks for any help guys.
