Ugh, I'm typing this more as a vent than anything else. I recently obtained a boat and have it stored in the marina. Well since day one, they have been doing things halve assed like not cleaning the boat before and after putting it in the water. I haven't really cared because I don't really want them spraying water on the deck. It took me 5 phone calls and going down there for them to finally get me the previous owners liscense plate off the trailer. My boss has her boat there and I noticed the prop was off. Of course it was already supposed to be fixed. Of course my biggest worry is that if they slack off on these simple things, are they slacking off on stuff like flushing the motor.

Well yesterday I had them take it down and put in on the rack so that I could clean her. I planned on going out on the water this weekend. Well I noticed that the key was set in the accessory position. I'm an idiot too because I left the cassette-ipod adapter in the cassette so it would be hard to tell if the radio was on but I imagine if you look at the gauges you would notice. The key sits in a way that it actually looks like it is in the off position when truely its in the accessory. I do not know if that was standard location with the boat "2001 searay 180" or what.

In any case, my battery was drained. There was zero power and I unfortunately did not bring a voltmeter but I'm almost 100 percent sure. I called the guy over and let him know that one of his staff let the key on and drained the battery. I did not want him blaming me. I knew this was going to happen too. So they brought over a battery charger. I hope the battery isn't toast. Now today, I feel like I have to go there and baby sit because I really don't trust these people. I unfortunately have to keep it there because I live in a gated community and don't have the space.

I am creating labels to stick on the switch as i type this..

Re: Marina Blues...

Is a complete wash in the contract, or just a hose down? Clean boats can get dirty just sitting around, even if stored indoors. Unfortunately, work delays on repairs are commonplace in the boating industry. Maybe they are waiting on an unexpected part or found additional problems. It's hard to say since we don't have the full story on that one. Maybe they are simply waiting until the boat is ready to launch to slap the prop back on again. Leaving the key in ACC. sounds like an inoccent oversight. You did admit that the acc. and off are in odd positions. I sympathize with your frustrations.

Re: Marina Blues...

I have a trailer.. Its the off site storage that's a problem. We live in a deed restricted community (I know, I know!!) where we can't keep boats out in the open. I'm not really asking for much, just do your job and honor what was stated in the contract. Today I called them and asked if the battery was charged. They told me that they would check and call me back. I have yet to get a call from them.
Well tomorrow I'm calling them to have them put her in the water for me. If I show up and they tell me the battery is dead. I'm going to shove my foot up their arses.

Easy fix, find a new Marina. You are not going to be happy with this Marina or get the type service you are looking for.

Just so yoo know, your gauges do not work in when the key is in ACC postion.

Re: Marina Blues...

There are a lot of off-site storage places that you can keep the boat cheaper than keeping it at the marina. I recommend putting it on the trailer, investing in a good cover, and finding a place locally where you can park it in a fenced area, or even one with a built shelter. If the boat isn't the way you like it, then you'll have no one to blame but yourself. You wash it, you flush it, and you launch/load it. Your boat, I presume, is an 18' model. It's a piece of cake to launch/load, even solo. Our marina will hose the boat off, but they do not wash it. If you want it flushed, you're responsible for that before they stick it in the rack.

I've never used a marina, but I did use offsite storage (mini-storage) for a while. Eventually, it came down to moving the cars out of the garage and making it a "boat house." My city ordinances actually don't allow me to park my boat in the driveway, so it's gotta' be in the garage.

I keep my boat in a High & Dry marina. I scrub it down and flush the engine while I am doing it. Ten minutes and I'm done. The cost to have the marina do it is more than I want to pay, and I know it gets done when I do it.

to me, that's the crux of the situation imho.

man, ya need to get poor like me (others too i'd guess). poor folk don't live in gated community's with rules. we all got spare cars (i used that term loosely) sitting around the back yard. + boats in the drive way. i got a spent boat and a half spent pu truck in the back yard and the better boat in the driveway behind my daily driver van (single white rock driveway ya know). tonight is gonna be approaching freezing and i'm ok if it does freeze. i just went out and personally drained the water from it. i know i'm safe. i service it when i feel the desire too as it sits right outside my bedroom window. i got a good start on winterization today. i know what's been done and whats left i need to do. if i don't get something done i wanted, it's my fault then. no one to blame but me. but i'm more reliable than that. certainly more relaiable than having someone else do it, even if they get paid for doing it. this time of year boat shops (marinas etc.) are swamped with customers wanting it done yesterday. someones gonna have to wait or get blown off inadvertently due to having to much work to do...
small saving grace for being poor i guess and having to do it (take care of your boat) yourself outside your bedroom window and all... ;)

Re: Marina Blues...

You are unhappy because you are in a gated boat PRISON.

Take the boat to a BETTER marina OR even Just dock space. Take some time to drive up to nearby places. Docking & marinas to get lots of happy people at one place.

Northern Marine is the best in Clayton ,New York. There are others. But you have to do a lot of leg work to find them.

Re: Marina Blues...

Start tipping the marina hands when they do stuff for you ($5, $10, $20), even if it's stuff they're supposed to do anyway... I guarantee you'll see a change.

Re: Marina Blues...

I never tip for poor service or what I did not expect. I deal with the owner or his right hand woman. He has discourged me from needles checks that other marinas are charging friends for.

Good people work for the same wages as other people.

I am retired. I work for nothing. :)

My first marina with my new Chaparral said they HAD to replace a damaged O ring in the V8 engine. Factory new paint all around the clamp area.
Crooks. Never went back.
