Marina Fuel?

This is the first boat I have owned that has needed mixed gas and has a tank that is too big to just lift off of the boat. What I was wondering is when you fuel up at a marina do they mix the gas for you or do you have to add your own 2 stroke oil? With the inboards I have had all they had to do was pump the gas in. So I was wondering if I need to carry my own oil. I know it would be cheaper to get gas before I get to the lake but we are planning on staying for over a week and I'm sure we will need fuel while we are there. Thanks

I keep a jug of oil and marked bottle on the boat and add oil right before the attendant pumps the gas. It's a little bit of a hassle, but it works out fine.

You didn't need mixed fuel with your inboards because they are 4 strokes just like your car. To answer your question, yes, you should carry your own oil, or the marina probably has some that you can buy at the fuel dock also. The best thing would probably be to get a gallon jug of oil and one of those measuring bottles to measure out how much oil you need to add.

Okay! Thanks guys that's what I will do. I'll take some oil and the Oz. per gallon measure along.

If you have a two stroke, you need to add oil. If your set-up has an oil pump, then you don't mix it, the pump does it for you. If it does not, then you need to pre-mix. I have never seen a marina that sells fuel with oil already in it. Folks are too partial to their own oil and mix rates. If you add it, then you know it was added correctly. Plus, the marina would have to have two tanks or some sort of blending system at the pump itself. Perhaps some marina out there does, but I have never seen one.

you're making me feel old...
I guess it was the 1970's... all the marinas where I am had 2 pumps. One was always 50:1, the other straight gas. Been a while since I've seen that.

Now, most will sell you the oil and you or they will mix it as you gas up. Most people prefer to do their own math and measuring like Incoop.

Re: Marina Fuel?

I mix my own but i keep it simple, last year i bought 8 of the 16 oz bottles of 2 stroke oil. 8 16 oz bottles is 1 gallon. 16 oz to 6 gallons is a 50:1 mix, and after that i buy the gallon jugs and refill the 16 oz bottles. So when i fill my tanks its in 6 gallon batches so dump in a small bottle and fill and go, no guessing or measuring or mess at the pump.

Most marinas do have oil and will add it for you but its a bit cheaper if you have your own.

I took a permanent marker and wrote the amount of oil needed for 1 gallon-5 gallons-7 gallons and 10 gallons on the gas tank. I like the idea of a pint to six gallons. I had 20 oz. left in a bottle and I bought a couple of quarts today. That should be enough to last us for this trip. I will look into buying by the gallon and using the pint bottles. Thanks

It works pretty good, I got one of the sea sense oil bottles to measure it out in and it takes all of about 15 to 20 minutes to measure it all out. I am on my fifth gallon for the year using a 9.9 .

That's a good idea. Might use it on my new to me 25 Merc.
