Does anyone have a source for the various molded connectors and inner contacts used in automotive and marine applications? I can't find anything in less-than-OEM quantities beyond the NAPA few.

Other night my Durango ABS motor started running and wouldn't quit with key. I damaged the release squeeze and the red lock bar while trying to detach it in the dark (I begin to lose patience quickly at 14 degrees in blowing snow).

Whenever I find the problem (haven't looked yet), I'll bet it's gonna be at a connector.

I'm always dissatified with repair workarounds. Time before was Power Window harness stress break at the driver door controller. Dodge fix was to replace the entire harness! My fix was effective but uuUGLy -- I don't want to tell you about it...

And I'd like to make a remote start harness for Briggs Vanguard generator. Need the connector that attaches to the key switch -- the list goes on...

What is everyone else doing? Are ugly workarounds an acceptable necessity or am I missing something?

Short of hitting up radio shack and or NAPA and being creative I don't know what to suggest.

I believe it is the "brother in law concept" that causes the problems. Some manufacturers have BIL who make connectors and inferior ones at that but since they are family they get the contract. I still have never ever understood why torx screws were installed in headlights and taillights.... probably the BIL concept.

You could search for Allied Electronics or give them a call. They have a catalog about as thick as the Denver phone book. 1.800.433.5700 There's a chance they carry the right connectors or know where to get them.

Sooner or later, all this fancy crap that just goes bad, will be on ebay as the whole harness. Us motorcycle guys always look for old wiring harnesses for a few bucks for the parts. I just sold a old CDI unit (black box) that would cost over $300 for $45, and I got the whole harness for only $25, and I only needed the starter relay. Always have a plan....
