Marine Carb vs. Automotive

Hey all-

I'm about to purchase a new carb for my boat. With everyone's help, I had decided on the Edelbrock EDL-1409 marine carb.

I called to order it, and the local speed ship I'm dealing with suggest the EDL-1406. Same specs, but not in the marine line. It's a little cheaper which is nice, but it's also readily available, which is also nice. No waiting for shipping.

My question is....is an automotive carb ok to use? I've heard mixed opinions.

Thanks in advance...

Your local speed shop is wrong. Do not use the 1406, get the 1409. The auto version could flood and end up pouring fuel out onto the engine/bilge, the marine version will dump a flooding condition into the throat of the carb, not outside.

You also don't need all of the vacuum ports (timed/manifold vac) that are on the 1406.

What type of boat are you installing on? If you have an open bilge, it's probably not a big deal, if a closed bilge, you're looking to go BOOM. And if you ever get a thorough coast guard inspection, you won't get back on the water until it's replaced with a marine carb.
And if it does go BOOM, your insurance won't pay out on it after they inspect and find an automotive carb.
Not worth the risk.
I'd tell the speed shop guy to pound sand and order from another vendor.

Not to pile on... but it is a valid safefy concern to make sure you use a marine carb.

I would not ask for any more advice from your local speed shop. There is a world of difference both in safety AND in performance needs between the automotive and marine world. Even if they both use Chevy engines.

Agreed - he is giving dangerous advice - give someone else the business and TELL them why....

I agree with all the advice you've gotten here. Do NOT discuss marine parts with an auto speed shop unless the person you speak to happens to be a boating nut. Boats don't run on land and cars don't run on water. When it comes to elctrical systems and fuel systems, they're two different animals. Stay safe; stay marine. Hy

I would go back to the place and talk to the manager/owner and tell them that their salesperson is giving out very dangerous advice.

Not only would your insurance not pay out a claim, but if someone was killed in a "Kaboom" that could be attributed to this carb, and they found out that any commercial business suggested and sold the carb, the survivors lawyer would be naming them (along with you) in the ensuing wrongful death lawsuit!!

If a jury hands out cash for an idiot spilling hot coffee in their own lap ...........

I just question the validity of a 'wrongful death' suit by survivors.....

Oh, I totally agree.

And as jt said, if someone can spill hot coffee in their lap and sue McDonalds for $3 million, I believe a survivor could sue for their own death,,, it would be a landmark case of suing for a near death experience... :D

Reminds me of the old law question - if a plane crashes on the border of the US and Canada - where do they bury the survivors?
