Hi - Replacing distributor cap and rotor on a 1972 140 hp mercruiser GM engine . Put in electronic points and new cap and rotor from a marine dealer a number of years ago .Can I use new cap and rotor from NAPA or should I stick with the probably more expensive Mercruiser dealer ? Thanks

napa caries sierra marine parts.

there is no automotive version of the distributor cap in your 3.0 motor as that is not an automotive engine.

The one thing that you may want to look at is the length of the blade on the rotor. Mercruiser inline engines used to stop for no reason when coming off of plane, then restart like there was nothing wrong after a few minutes. The problem was solved with a new rotor blade that is about a 1/32” longer than the original. A $2.00 fix. The rotor would get so hot that it would go to ground. This was when the engines were using points /condenser ignitions,
