Hello All,

I am 85% ready for the season, boat out of storage...check, clean the boat...check, make sure I am Coast Guard compliant...check and FAIL. My fire extinguisher is out of date, oh crap. So my question is simple, do you folks know the best place to purchase a marine grade fire extinguisher and what do I look for to ensure I am Coast Guard compliant?

I bought mine from bass pro shop..but I was also told that you can get a fire extinguisher from wal-mart..it just has to be ABC..for paper, electrical and gas/oil fires.

What do you mean "out of date"? Is the gage within the "green"?

I felt weird trusting my boat and passengers to a Wal-Mart fire extinguisher. Probally just me!!!!

Wal-Mart doesn't make fire extinguishers they just buy them, you'll be safe.

Even with a brass valve, probably cheaper to buy a new one than have one of the small ones refilled.

Coast Guard inspection sheet says: "NOTE: Fire extinguishers must be readily accessible and verified as serviceable". You do the inspection and sigh off the card yourself so an extinguisher being "expired" doesn't sound quite right.

Here's a link with a good explanation of fire extinguishers that are acceptable for marine use: http://www.boatus.com/foundation/Findings/46/page2.asp

And as long as you're using a checklist, might as well take a look at this one from the Coast Guard: http://forms.cgaux.org/archive/a7012.pdf

There's a lot of good info there. Allows you to do your own safety check using the same guidelines as the Coast Guard.

I just purchase a Wal-Mart one for my boat, made by Kadee and is a lot cheaper then BPS. BPS is about 32.00 Wal-Mart 11.00. The one at BPS is nicer.

In case people don't look farther than this thread, an extinguisher needs to be "USCG approved", & that information will be on the label. Just type "ABC" extinguisher won't do it.

The previous owner of our boat was a volunteer fireman. He 7 of those little cylinders scattered about the boat. must of which were very out dated.. we are up to date with all current regulations now. lol

Ned L is correct. The fire extinguisher must say that it is USCG approved. However, many of the lower cost Kidde brand fire extinguishers that you can buy at Wal-mart and other places ARE USCG approved and cost significantly less than the ones marketed directly to boaters. Look for the ones that say "Kitchen/Garage" on the package. Last year when I finished up my restore on my Sea Ray I put a new extinguisher in. I wanted a larger unit than the typical 2 to 3 pound units (amount of chemical). In looking at the models at Wal Mart I found that the 5 lb home style units WERE NOT USCG approved so I opted for 2 of the smaller units that were USCG approved. I installed one in view under the passenger console and the other in one of the bow compartments. In the stern is where there will be a fire on my boat and having one back there where you can't get to it because of a fire would be useless. They are not expensive and cheap insurance as far as I am concerned. I also recommend that anyone who hasn't actually used one go ahead and spend a few extra bucks and blow one off. You will be surprised at how little time it takes to empty one of those extinguishers. If you ever do have to use one for real remember to aim for the base of the fire.

Yes it is, when my daughter was born my wife and I went to a 1 day training on fires, as part of the class we all fought a wall (complete with curtin) fire. It was scary to stand so close and aim the powder at the fire. We had to put the fire out completely, that I hope is the only time I do that.

I would recommend anyone going out on the boat to at least shot one off in the driveway just to experience the short lived force that comes with squeezing the lever.

I am a volunteer Firefighter myself. My extinguisher is USCG approved and approved by Tenn boating laws. I bought mine at Bass Pro, I was just giving options about where to get them. You want an ABC extinguisher due to the fact that you never know what you might encounter on the water or on the road. I have two USCG approved Extinguisher's, one in boat and one in my truck.

good point 109 about not keeping them where the fire is likely to occur, like in the engine box, or by the stove at home.

Remember, one reason to carry things like fire extinquishers is to assist others.

I've been a professional paid firefighter for 25 years and I have worked a lot of boat/marina fires in my time, my advise is while extinguishers can be great tools if used right, there's no way it's going to stop a flowing fuel fire or an energized electrical fire which are prolly most common on vessels, have your life jackets readily accessible and ditch the moment it's beyond your control, boat fires haul butt because of the fuel and all the resins used in fiberglass, you don't have a lot of time to work with.

Re: Marine Grade Fire Extinguisher

Just a few additional items (from a 23 year fireman)...

1) "What do you mean "out of date"? Is the gage within the "green"?" This means nothing. Although the presumption is that it will work, it needs to be recertified annually! Don't blindly trust it because it's still showing in the green range. That only means that it's holding pressure.

2) You can have them refilled. ask at your nearest FD. The vast majority of Fire Departments DO NOT refill or recertify entinguishers any longer. There may be some smaller volunteer departments that still dabble in this, but most won't take on the liability of recertifying an extinguisher. There are tons of outside companies that will do this. Check your local yellow pages.

3) I would recommend anyone going out on the boat to at least shot one off in the driveway just to experience the short lived force that comes with squeezing the lever. Please don't do this. The majority of fire extinguishers for residential use are Dry Chemical Powder extinguishers. The powder that is expelled (and there is a lot of it) is messy and it is an irritant to the eyes and respiratory system. There may even be local laws about randomly discharging an extinguisher. Instead, get in contact with your local FD and have them set up a demonstration for you. They will bring out a fire pan and actually have you extinguish a fire. Just shooting one off into the air won't accomplish a thing, but it will pi$$ everyone else around you off. Getting with the FD will allow you to actually put out a fire and that way, you'll know exactly what to expect.

4) The Wal-Mart extinguisher and the BPS are the same (by type and weight). Wal-Mart gets better prices and doesn't have the mark up. make sure they are USCG approved.

Have fun! Stay safe! :):):)
