what type of diff? If its a locking or limited slip, i'd change it ASAP. If its a regular old open diff, not a problem.

yep, still need to know what diff is in it. Chances are its an open diff, but you never know... If you aren't sure, you need to figure out and replace with the correct fluid. Lower unit oil is basically almost identical to standard 75w-90 gear oil, which is great for open diffs, and not so good for clutch based diffs. (In other words, you would have the same issue if you dumped in regular old 75w-90 into that diff.)

You might be able to get away with it, since it wasn't much you added, but FYI that diff takes 75W-140 synthetic gear oil.

It shouldn't be loosing oil BTW. Is the diff cover rotted or leaking? Pinion seal leaking? Axle seal leaking? Fix the leak and put the right stuff in.

I'm with the rest of the guys here. Fix the reason it got low and put in the proper fluid.

Look at it this way: You started out with one problem, you didn't fix the problem you just tried to make it go away.
But you made a mistake and put the wrong fluid in. Now you have two problems. Easiest thing to do now
is take it to your favorite shop and get it fixed right.

Don't feel bad, I put 20 gallons of unleaded in my diesel F350 and drove on down the road. I was on the phone
chatting away when the truck started protesting...

I park on concreet and it has,nt been leaking,I just checked it and it was,nt up to the fill hole so i toped it off,I talked to an ase ford mechanic and he said not to worry about it,the marine lube was better than the auto lube anyway..

Check the brake drum backer plates for dampness. The axle seals will weep, and when the oil hit's the drums it gets slung out, so you will not see a prominent leak. The other problem with an axle seal leak is your brake shoes will get contaminated with gear oil.

It just so happens I'm an ASE Master tech/L1, and I don't agree with the Ford mechanic. Ford specifies 75W-140 synthetic for that diff, and has been since the 10th generation F-150 came into existence in '97. I own a '97 F-150, V6, with an 8.8 open diff, and that is the only fluid I will use. While it's expensive, and I can't tell you the difference between a diff that calls for standard 80W-90 and this one, it's piece of mind that I'm not going to smoke the bearings or knife edge the gears using the wrong stuff.

Ultimately it's your truck, do with it as you wish.
